The Nigerian Navy has successfully contained a fire outbreak at the Nigerian Correctional Service Quarters in Kirikiri, Apapa area of Lagos, preventing what could have escalated into a major disaster.
The incident, which occurred at about 11:00 p.m. on April 22, 2026, reportedly began after a gas cylinder explosion in one of the residential buildings within the quarters. The fire quickly spread to a nearby structure, raising concerns among residents.
In a swift emergency response, personnel from Nigerian Navy Ship WEY, alongside the Naval Ordnance Depot, deployed two fire trucks to the scene. Their rapid and coordinated intervention helped contain the blaze before it could engulf more buildings, prior to the arrival of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
Despite the damage to two buildings and loss of property, no casualties were recorded as of the time of filing this report.
Commending the officers involved, the Navy highlighted their professionalism, courage, and prompt action, noting that their intervention prevented a wider catastrophe. The incident also brought renewed attention to the need for improved fire safety awareness and strict adherence to preventive measures in residential areas.
The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to supporting civil authorities and providing emergency assistance when required to protect lives and property.
