The Nigerian Navy has rescued three passengers from a capsized boat along the Bennett River in Warri, Delta State, averting what could have resulted in a tragic loss of lives.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, said the rescue operation was carried out by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) DELTA during a routine maritime security patrol aimed at ensuring safety and security on the nation’s waterways.
According to Folorunsho, naval personnel on patrol noticed distressed passengers and floating debris from a capsized boat, signaling an emergency situation on the river.
The patrol team immediately launched a search and rescue operation, successfully recovering the three victims and salvaging valuable items from the wreckage.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the boat overturned due to severe weather conditions and rough waves caused by a heavy rainstorm in the area.
Following their rescue, the passengers were evacuated to the NNS DELTA Sick Bay, where they received prompt medical attention. The victims were later discharged after their conditions were stabilized.
Folorunsho noted that the successful operation highlights the Navy’s commitment not only to maritime security but also to protecting lives and responding swiftly to emergencies within Nigeria’s maritime domain.
He added that the incident underscores the importance of sustained naval patrols and presence on inland waterways to enhance safety, provide rapid assistance to waterway users in distress, and support lawful maritime activities.
