The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has reiterated that building a responsible and sustainable Artificial Intelligence (AI) ecosystem in Nigeria goes beyond regulatory frameworks, stressing the need for strong collaboration, inclusivity, and coordinated action among all stakeholders.
Speaking during a panel session on “Accountability, Governance and Institutional Coordination” at the Omnivers Africa Summit 3.0, Dr. Amina Sambo Magaji, Director of Information and Communications Technology at NITDA, underscored the agency’s commitment to driving the implementation of Nigeria’s National AI Strategy through strategic institutional partnerships, development of digital infrastructure, talent cultivation, and expanded digital literacy programmes.
Dr. Magaji noted that while government plays a critical role in setting enabling policies and governance structures, the successful adoption and responsible use of AI depends heavily on the active participation of academia, industry players, civil society organisations, state governments, and citizens.
She further emphasised the importance of a multi-stakeholder approach to AI governance, stressing that sustained collaboration is essential for developing policies that encourage responsible innovation, promote inclusion and equity, and ensure that artificial intelligence delivered meaningful socio-economic benefits for Nigeria’s digital future.
The session brought together experts and policymakers who explored pathways for strengthening institutional coordination and accountability frameworks necessary for effective AI governance across Africa.
