The Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Adolphus Wabara, has announced that the party’s BoT has assumed administrative leadership following a Supreme Court judgment that nullified the National Working Committee (NWC).
Addressing members at the opening of the 84th BoT meeting on Sunday in Abuja, Wabara said the decision was in line with the provisions of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017), and was necessary to avert a leadership vacuum after the court ruling delivered on April 30, 2026.
The Supreme Court judgment annulled the 2025 National Convention that produced the Kabiru Turaki-led NWC and upheld the suspension of key party officials involved in organizing a parallel convention held in Abuja in March. Consequently, the outcome of that exercise was declared invalid.
Wabara noted that the swift intervention by the BoT had stabilized the party, adding that the PDP had since received widespread solidarity messages from supporters across the country.
“These messages reinforce the fact that Nigerians remain steadfast in their belief in the PDP and are confident that the party will overcome its challenges and lead the effort to rescue the nation in the 2027 general elections,” he said.
The BoT chairman commended the dissolved NWC led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki for what he described as their patriotism, resilience, and dedication to the party, despite the legal and political setbacks.
He also acknowledged the support of PDP governors, members of the National Assembly caucus, state party chairmen, and other stakeholders for standing firm during the crisis.
Providing a background to the crisis, Wabara traced the developments to a series of events beginning in July 2025, when the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) approved plans for a national convention in Ibadan. He alleged that certain party officials, in collaboration with external interests, instituted a court case to halt the convention without the knowledge of the NWC.
According to him, the situation was further complicated by the suspension of key officials, including the National Secretary, National Legal Adviser, and National Organising Secretary, whose actions, he said, contributed to the legal challenges that culminated in the Supreme Court ruling.
Wabara accused some individuals within the party of working in the interest of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to destabilize the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections but insisted that the party remains united and resilient.
Despite the crisis, he expressed optimism about the party’s future, declaring that the PDP “will never surrender to renegades” and is poised to emerge stronger.
The BoT chairman further disclosed that the party had secured the required two-thirds consent of NEC members to convene its 103rd NEC meeting scheduled for Monday, May 4, 2026, adding that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had been duly notified.
He urged BoT members to use the meeting to promote unity, reconciliation, and strategic direction to reposition the PDP for future electoral success.
