The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Philip Shaibu, has fulfilled his pledge to support the professional development of journalists by awarding scholarships to three members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Correspondents’ Chapel.
The beneficiaries—Princess Joy Omagha Idam, Odion Abdulrazak Musa, and Okoro Chukwudi are among participants currently undergoing the Institute’s Basic Certificate Course at the Athletes Development Centre in Abuja.
The scholarship award coincides with the full resumption of academic activities at the Institute’s training centres in Abuja, Edo and Kaduna states, reflecting the NIS management’s renewed commitment to expanding access to quality sports education and strengthening capacity across the sector.
According to the Institute, the initiative aligns with the vision of the Director-General to promote human capital development, enhance professional competence and foster stronger collaboration between the sports sector and the media.
Reacting to the development, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Felix Ojo, commended Shaibu for fulfilling his promise, describing the gesture as a demonstration of integrity, visionary leadership and a genuine commitment to empowering journalists through education.
Ojo said the scholarships would enhance the knowledge and capacity of journalists covering sports while strengthening the partnership between the National Institute for Sports and the Correspondents’ Chapel.
He also assured the Institute of the Chapel’s continued support in promoting its programmes and achievements.
The Correspondents’ Chapel congratulated the scholarship recipients and applauded the management of the National Institute for Sports for the initiative, expressed confidence that it would contribute to the growth of sports journalism and the overall development of sports in Nigeria.
