President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has joined millions of Catholics and Christians around the world in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, describing the late Pontiff as a humble servant of God, a relentless advocate for the poor, and a leading global voice for justice, peace, and environmental stewardship.
In a heartfelt statement issued from the State House on Monday, President Tinubu noted that Pope Francis’ death, coming just after Easter, marked a sacred return to his Maker during a season of renewed hope for Christians worldwide.
“His Holiness served the Church and the Master of the Church until the end,” Tinubu said. “He challenged the powerful to act with justice, called on nations to welcome the stranger, and reminded us that our common home this Earth is a gift we must protect for future generations.”
The President praised Pope Francis’ leadership since assuming the papacy in 2013, especially his focus on mercy, compassion for migrants and refugees, and his unwavering commitment to interfaith unity and global peace.
Highlighting the Pope’s strong advocacy for the developing world, Tinubu noted his consistent calls against economic injustice and his prayers for troubled regions, describing his encyclicals and pastoral letters as “doctrinal, timely, and deeply relevant.”
President Tinubu recalled watching Pope Francis deliver the traditional Easter Sunday blessing at St. Peter’s Basilica, expressing joy at the Pontiff’s appearance. “Alas, the Lord called him home a day after, making the world lose its most trenchant voice for justice and action against climate change,” he lamented.
On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, President Tinubu extended condolences to the Catholic Church, the global Catholic community, and the Christian faithful.
