It was a homecoming for alumni of Government Secondary School, Wushishi when they thronged Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi International Conference Centre, Minna for the 15th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Wushishi Old Students Association (WOSA).
The occasion evoked mixed feelings for many of them who were meeting for the first time after many years. It was a feeling of sadness and joy. Joy for reuniting with friends and classmates, and sadness over the decay in the school.
In his welcome remarks, the Chairman, Board of Trustees, Wushishi Old Students Association (WOSA) and former Secretary to the Government of Niger State (SSG), Prof. Muhammed Kuta Yahaya enjoined members of the Association to ensure that the past glory of the School is not only revived but is improved for the future.
The Chairman charged WOSA members to resolve to take upon themselves the challenge of restoring and developing the physical, intellectual, moral, and social fabric of the School.
The former Secretary to the State Government called on the Interim Committee of WOSA to intensify effort towards fostering unity among members of the Association, according to the former SSG, “creating the spirit of unity amongst all members irrespective of tribe, religious creed or socio-political affiliations should be the guiding principle”.
In his address, the Chairman, Interim Committee of WOSA, Alhaji Usman Liman welcome members to the AGM but was so emotional about the decay and apparent collapse of basic infrastructure in the School, added that the reality was that the school was in dire need of salvation.
In a lecture titled “Science and Technology, a panacea to Socio-Economic Development of Nigeria, Dr. Sadeeq Abubakar Mohammed of the Department of Agricultural and Bioresource Engineering, Federal University of Technology, Minna appealed to the State Government to as a matter of urgency convert Government Secondary School, Wushishi into a well-equipped Science-Based School where Students would be trained on various Science related areas.
In their separate remarks, members of WOSA who attended the AGM revealed that the meeting has provided them the opportunity to see their elders, mates, and juniors, share ideas as well as celebrate memories of the past and strengthen their unity..
They appealed to the State Government to hasten to revive the infrastructural decay in Government Secondary School, Wushishi, and resolved to work assiduously towards contributing their quota in restoring the lost glory of the College.
Highlights of the occasion were the inauguration of the Electoral Committee, ratification of the WOSA Constitution, and the inauguration of a four-member Committee to ensure the conversion of Government Secondary School, Wushishi to Model Science College, the Committee is to be Chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Idris Usman Gbogan other members include, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth Development, Alhaji Yunusa Nahauni, Director Chieftaincy Affairs, Ministry
for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Damlami Umar and Dean, Student Affairs, Newgate College of Health Technology, Alhaji Labaran SK.
Government Teachers College, Wushishi now Government Secondary School since its inception, produced some of the best set of Students across the State and the country and maintained a great record of excellent and sterling performance among the Nigerian learning population.
