APC applauds National Assembly’s swift approval of Emergency Rule in Rivers State

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has commended the National Assembly for its swift approval of President Bola Tinubu’s proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State, described the decision as a patriotic move to safeguard peace and security in the oil-rich state.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the APC praised the 10th Assembly for prioritizing national interest over partisanship, particularly acknowledging the opposition caucus for supporting the emergency measures.

“The President is committed to ensuring peace, maintaining law and order, protecting critical national assets in Rivers State, and ultimately restoring constitutional order in which all three arms of government executive, legislature, and judiciary coexist and perform their constitutionally assigned functions for the well-being and good governance of Rivers State,” the statement read.

The ruling party also criticized opposition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, accusing them of inaction during the crisis and attempting to exploit the situation for political gain.

“These self-serving individuals did what they do best issued a lengthy, convoluted, and utterly meaningless statement intended to score their names on news headlines and drum up tension,” the APC said.

The party called on the people of Rivers State and all Nigerians to support President Tinubu’s efforts to restore stability, protect lives and property, and ensure effective governance in the state.

The declaration of emergency rule followed escalating political tensions and security concerns in Rivers State, leading to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and state lawmakers for six months. The federal government has appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the interim administrator to oversee the state’s affairs during the emergency period.

The National Assembly’s approval of the proclamation granted the President the authority to implement measures aimed at restoring normalcy in the state, a move the APC insisted is in the best interest of the nation.
