Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has confirmed his participation in the forthcoming Diplomatic, Security, Trade and Investment International Conference in Abuja, where he will also receive the prestigious DICAN International Award for Statesmanship and Global Peace.
The high-level conference, themed “Information Warfare (FIMI): Strengthening Global Security, Trade and Investment Through Collaborative Truth: Role of Diplomacy, Intelligence and Media,” is scheduled to hold on May 20, 2026, at the Rotunda Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja.
Organisers said the former president accepted the honour in recognition of the credibility and global relevance of the platform convened by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN).
The award is aimed at recognising Jonathan’s contributions to democracy, peacebuilding and good governance across Africa and beyond.
At the conference, the former Nigerian leader is expected to deliver a keynote address on global peace and security, with particular focus on the growing threat posed by Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI), fake news and coordinated disinformation campaigns.
Speaking ahead of the summit, DICAN Chairman, Idehai Frederick, described Jonathan’s participation as a major boost to the international gathering.
According to him, “President Goodluck Jonathan’s acceptance of this award and his decision to address the assembly underscores the immense credibility of this platform.
“His enduring legacy as a champion of Nigerian, African and global democracy makes him the definitive voice to speak on safeguarding global peace against the tide of disinformation.”
The conference is being organised in partnership with the Centre for Communications, Development and Diplomacy in Africa and is expected to attract more than 100 diplomatic missions and international stakeholders.
Expected dignitaries include Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar; Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Ahmed; as well as ambassadors of the United States, China, Spain and the European Union. Representatives of security and intelligence agencies, corporate organisations, United Nations bodies and civil society groups are also expected at the summit.
Frederick urged participants to treat information warfare and disinformation as urgent global concerns capable of undermining democratic institutions, international trade and global stability.
“We must emerge from the conference with a unified, collaborative strategy for the ultimate good of the world,” he stated.
The conference will also serve as the launch of a global campaign against FIMI, fake news and disinformation.
Other notable speakers expected at the event include Ndudi Elumelu, Henry Ifeanyi Mbadiwe and Nonye Ayeni.
The event will conclude with an awards ceremony recognising institutions and individuals for exceptional contributions to national development, including Nigerian carrier Air Peace.
