President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Monday emerged as the unopposed candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The senatorial primary, held at Methodist School Ukana in Ukana West II Ward, Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, witnessed a massive turnout of party faithful, supporters and constituents who gathered to affirm Akpabio’s candidacy.
Although he was the sole aspirant for the ticket, residents and APC supporters thronged the venue in what observers described as a carnival-like atmosphere, with music, dancing and chants in support of the Senate President.
Many party members said their overwhelming support for Akpabio was based on what they described as his track record of effective representation and leadership in various public offices, including as commissioner, governor, Senate Minority Leader, minister and now President of the 10th Senate.
The exercise was monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society organisations and other stakeholders, who reportedly observed a peaceful and orderly process.
Returning Officer for the exercise, Mr Gabriel Ekong, commended party members for their conduct and praised the large turnout recorded during the primary.
Some APC stakeholders at the event noted that the strong show of support for Akpabio had further boosted the party’s mobilisation drive in Akwa Ibom State ahead of the general elections.
Speaking after his affirmation, Akpabio expressed appreciation to party faithful for their continued confidence in his leadership, pledging to sustain quality representation and effective service delivery at the National Assembly.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to promoting unity within the APC and supporting development-focused policies of the APC-led Federal Government.
The Senate President further urged constituents to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, and all APC candidates, assured the people that he would continue working to attract more democratic dividends to the district.
