The Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has called on Nigerian leaders to emulate the virtues of Jesus Christ by promoting peace, justice, and national unity, especially during this Easter season.
In his Easter message on Sunday, Senator Bamidele, who represents Ekiti Central Senatorial District, also revealed that the National Assembly is currently developing legal frameworks for the creation of state police as a strategic response to growing insecurity in the country.
“As we celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord, it is exigent we reflect on His virtues; learn from His consecration and live His life of purpose rooted in the pursuit of justice, love and redemption for humanity,” he stated.
He urged leaders at all levels to shun divisive rhetoric and actions, stressing that only collective efforts can address the country’s challenges.
“In Nigeria today, Christ’s example clearly presents us a glimpse of how we should live together as compatriots and not competitors; collaborators and not combatants; comrades and not contenders in the task of building a viable and virile federation that will serve the interest of all,” Bamidele added.
Reacting to recent violent attacks in parts of the country, including Benue and Plateau States, Bamidele described them as acts that contradict Christ’s teachings of love and peace. He called on security agencies to intensify efforts in apprehending the masterminds and sponsors of such attacks.
“While the Authority of the National Assembly is in the process of developing legal frameworks for the establishment of state police as one of the measures to address insecurity, we urge security agencies to work together as a team,” he said.
The Senate Leader also cautioned political actors against exploiting the nation’s challenges to push divisive narratives, warning that such behavior undermines the country’s unity and progress.
“Nigeria is our ultimate project. As a parliament, we are committed to the actualisation of this project. This is evident in all the legislative initiatives we are pushing since the birth of the 10th National Assembly,” he said.
Bamidele concluded with a passionate appeal to all Nigerians, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation, to unite in the fight against insecurity and in the pursuit of national development.
