The Federal Road Safety Corps has intensified its nationwide enforcement drive, recording a total of 1,691 arrests within five days under a special intervention tagged Operation Guduma, aimed at curbing dangerous driving practices and strengthening road safety compliance across the country.
The operation, carried out simultaneously across major transport corridors in 11 states, targeted persistent traffic violations including overloading, mix-loading, use of fake diplomatic number plates, and other fraudulent vehicle identification practices that pose serious threats to road users and national security.
According to the Corps, 683 offenders were arrested for overloading and mix-loading, while 1,003 arrests were made in connection with number plate-related offences. In addition, five individuals were apprehended for the use of fake diplomatic number plates, a violation the agency described as particularly concerning due to its security implications.
The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, said the outcome of the operation was both revealing and alarming, noting that it exposed deep-seated disregard for traffic laws and growing abuse of vehicle registration systems.
He explained that the misuse of diplomatic and unauthorised number plates, alongside reckless loading practices, not only increases the risk of road traffic crashes but also creates loopholes that could be exploited for criminal activities. He stressed that such violations undermine public trust in vehicle identification and compromise national safety architecture.
The Corps Marshal further disclosed that several intercepted vehicles were found carrying dangerously overloaded cargo and improperly secured containers, conditions that significantly heighten the likelihood of fatal crashes and economic losses on Nigerian roads.
Reaffirming the agency’s commitment, he stated that the FRSC will sustain its zero-tolerance stance on road safety violations, emphasizing that road discipline remains non-negotiable. He added that every prevented crash represents lives saved, families protected, and improved national productivity.
The FRSC also announced plans to institutionalise Operation Guduma across major highways nationwide, while strengthening collaboration with other security and law enforcement agencies to ensure that offenders are not only arrested but also duly prosecuted as a deterrent to others.
