The Edo State Government has strongly refuted recent allegations made by the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, over the credibility of the September 21, 2025, governorship election in the state.
In a statement issued on Thursday, May 8, 2025, by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Mr. Fred Itua, the government described Obi’s claims as “unfounded” and “deeply disrespectful” to the people of Edo State who peacefully exercised their democratic rights.
“The Edo State Governorship Election was conducted in accordance with the highest standards of electoral integrity,It was widely adjudged as credible by both local and international observers, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ensuring a level playing field for all parties.”the statement read.
The government accused Mr. Obi of making statements not backed by credible evidence, suggesting his comments were politically motivated rather than aimed at strengthening democracy.
“It is regrettable that a figure of his standing would choose to undermine the democratic process with such baseless allegations,” the government added.
The statement further urged Peter Obi to retract his remarks and instead contribute meaningfully to national unity and democratic development.
Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peace and democratic progress, stated that the will of the Edo people, as expressed through the ballot, must be respected.
