A pro-government group, The Democratic Front (TDF), has backed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent remarks on Nigeria’s opposition, insisting that opposition parties lack clear vision and credible policy alternatives ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Mallam Danjuma Muhammad, and Secretary, Chief Wale Adedayo, the group accused opposition figures of repeatedly criticising government policies without offering “workable alternatives” to support their positions.
TDF said the opposition has consistently relied on what it described as exaggerated claims and disputed data to challenge the Tinubu administration’s economic and governance reforms.
“More infuriating is the galling display of ignorance by the leadership of the opposition in the manner it often criticises the policies and programmes of the President Tinubu administration, without proffering workable alternatives,” the statement read.
The group further argued that the opposition’s response to key reforms—particularly those linked to subsidy removal and broader economic restructuring—has been driven more by political rhetoric than policy substance. It maintained that comparisons between pre- and post-reform indicators are often misrepresented to support “flawed narratives.”
TDF also dismissed allegations that the administration is attempting to shrink Nigeria’s democratic space or engineer a one-party state, describing such claims as unfounded and politically motivated.
According to the group, fears of democratic backsliding were “laughable and unbelievable,” insisting that similar accusations are part of a recurring pattern in opposition politics.
It also referenced historical political debates involving former Senate President David Mark, alleging that past actions by some opposition figures contributed to attempts to regulate or limit party proliferation in earlier democratic periods.
On recent opposition coalition efforts involving figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the group said the developments reflect internal contradictions within the opposition camp. It described the situation as evidence of ideological inconsistency and political confusion.
TDF added that Nigerians should remain cautious of what it called “political antics” of opposition parties and instead focus on evaluating governance based on performance and policy direction.
The statement was coming amid increasing political positioning by both ruling and opposition blocs as preparations gradually intensify toward the 2027 general elections.
