The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the traditional military parade usually held to commemorate Democracy Day, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 26th year of uninterrupted democratic governance.
According to the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Democracy Day Celebration, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will instead deliver a nationwide broadcast at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2025.
In a marked departure from past celebrations, the highlight of this year’s observance will be a joint session of the National Assembly at 12:00 noon, where President Tinubu is expected to deliver a State of the Nation address. The session will be attended by members of the diplomatic corps, former leaders, and other dignitaries.
The day’s events will conclude with a public lecture scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja. The lecture, themed “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms,” will bring together key stakeholders, including government officials, political leaders, scholars, and representatives of civil society, to reflect on the progress made and challenges ahead.
The Federal Government enjoined all Nigerians to participate in the day’s events and uphold the democratic ideals for which June 12 is celebrated.
