The Federal Government has commissioned ten major infrastructural projects at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH), Gwagwalada, as part of efforts to reposition the nation’s healthcare system under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
President Tinubu, represented at the event on Thursday by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving access to quality healthcare services for all Nigerians.
He commended the Chief Medical Director of UATH, Professor Bisala Ahmed Ekele, for championing the health sector transformation at the hospital and aligning with the national development blueprint.
“President Tinubu is expanding the health sector through the establishment and upgrade of teaching hospitals, alongside the creation of specialized centres to address critical health needs,” Professor Pate stated.
The Minister also noted ongoing reforms and investments in primary, secondary, and tertiary health institutions across the country, stressing the importance of synergy among all tiers of government and the private sector in achieving sustainable healthcare delivery.
Speaking at the occasion, Professor Ekele described the month of May as significant in the hospital’s history and said the newly commissioned projects reflect the management’s commitment to infrastructure expansion, staff development, and improved service delivery.
According to him, over the past year, the hospital initiated and completed 10 key projects, including both clinical and staff welfare facilities. He appealed to the government to provide a solar farm to address energy supply challenges in the hospital.
Chairman of the UATH Board, Dr. Ikechukwu Odikpe, also backed the call for a solar power solution and disclosed that discussions had commenced with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to address the hospital’s power needs.
The ten projects commissioned included:
- Male Surgical Ward
- Medical/Family Planning Unit
- Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- Assisted Reproductive Construction Unit
- 50-room Senior Staff Quarters
- 50-room Junior Staff Quarters
- CT Scan Department
- And other auxiliary facilities
The Federal Government urged other teaching hospitals across the country to take a cue from UATH and prioritize innovation, excellence, and infrastructure development to uplift the healthcare sector.
