The Federal Government has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic flood disaster that struck Mokwa in Niger State, resulting in the loss of several lives, the destruction of homes, and the displacement of hundreds of residents.
In a statement issued on Thursday, May 30, 2025, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has been fully briefed on the incident and has directed all relevant emergency and security agencies to intensify ongoing search and rescue efforts.
“The immediate priority of the Federal Government is to save lives and provide urgent relief to survivors,” the statement read.
According to the minister, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in partnership with the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Niger State Government, has been mobilized to ensure swift and coordinated intervention in affected communities.
The government also commended the bravery and dedication of first responders and volunteers who are actively involved in rescue and relief operations amid difficult conditions.
Residents in flood-prone and affected areas have been advised to cooperate with emergency officials and adhere strictly to evacuation and safety directives to prevent further loss of life.
While extending heartfelt condolences to families who lost loved ones, the Federal Government reiterated its commitment to standing with the people of Mokwa and providing all necessary support to help them rebuild their lives.
The flood, which followed heavy rainfall in the region, has left a trail of destruction and heightened concerns over the impact of climate-related disasters in vulnerable communities.
