The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and the Lagos Business School (LBS), Pan-Atlantic University, have agreed to deepen collaboration on artificial intelligence (AI), data protection, and capacity building to promote responsible innovation and strengthen Nigeria’s digital economy.
The partnership was discussed during a courtesy visit by the Dean of Lagos Business School, Professor Olayinka David-West, who led a delegation to the National Commissioner/Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji.
Speaking during the visit, Professor David-West commended Dr. Olatunji for the Commission’s achievements since its establishment and expressed LBS’s interest in exploring strategic areas of collaboration, particularly on the national Artificial Intelligence Scaling Hub initiative.
She stressed the importance of developing Nigeria’s digital ecosystem through capacity building, robust policy development, and effective regulatory frameworks. According to her, both institutions must work together to ensure the country maximises the opportunities presented by AI while protecting the rights of data subjects.
Responding, Dr. Olatunji said artificial intelligence has become an integral part of modern society and underscored the need to embed Privacy by Design in AI-driven solutions to safeguard personal data and uphold privacy rights.
He reiterated that the NDPC’s regulatory approach is developmental, noting that the Commission is committed to promoting innovation, supporting economic growth, and contributing to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) without creating unnecessary barriers for businesses.
At the end of the meeting, both institutions agreed to establish a joint implementation team that will coordinate the partnership, sustain engagement, and develop policy and capacity-building initiatives aimed at strengthening data protection and privacy practices across Nigeria.
