Former leaders of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have called for a renewed focus on moral values and stronger institutional support for Corps Members, as part of efforts to prepare them for future leadership roles in Nigeria.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the current Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, to his Abuja residence, former NYSC Chief Executive, Reverend Peter Okuromade, stressed the need for a moral rebirth among Corps Members. He noted that as role models to younger generations, Corps Members must be grounded in the principles of responsible citizenship, particularly during their orientation camp experience.
Okuromade, who led the Scheme between January and March 2002, commended General Nafiu’s leadership style since assuming office. He also praised the DG’s commitment to the welfare of Corps Members and staff, describing it as commendable.
In a similar development, another former NYSC Director-General, Major General Suleiman Kazaure (Rtd), lauded the Scheme’s enduring contributions to national unity, youth development, job creation, and empowerment. He made the remarks during a separate visit by General Nafiu to his residence in Abuja.
Kazaure, who served as NYSC helmsman from April 2016 to October 2019, urged the current leadership to deepen collaboration with key stakeholders to enhance the security of Corps Members and officials, especially those expected to serve as ad hoc staff during the 2027 general elections.
He also expressed readiness to provide advisory support when necessary, encouraging the DG to remain steadfast in his efforts.
“You are doing very well, keep it up. I am proud of you,” Kazaure said.
Earlier, Brigadier General Nafiu acknowledged the contributions of past NYSC Chief Executives to the growth and achievements of the Scheme. He pledged to build on their legacies and sustain the progress recorded over the years.
The visits underscored ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional continuity and reinforce the NYSC’s role in national development.
