The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has achieved another landmark under the leadership of Comrade Grace Ike, with the successful facilitation of free eye surgery for former Council Chairman, Comrade Ndamadu Sule, at Nizamiye Hospital, Abuja.
The surgery, conducted on August 28, 2025, ended years of visual impairment for the veteran journalist, restoring his sight and improving his quality of life.
Expressing heartfelt appreciation, Comrade Sule described the intervention as an act of compassion and exemplary leadership.
“By December 22, it would be seven years since my struggle began. I thank them for spending resources to help me. I remain deeply grateful to the NUJ-FCT Council for their support,” he said.
Overjoyed by the outcome, Sule prayed for continued blessings on Comrade Grace Ike and her executive team, urged colleagues to rally behind her leadership.
“She called me before the elections. I didn’t know her, but I prayed for her as a female leader. God answered those prayers. Her work in healthcare speaks for itself. I am thankful she became Chairman and is fulfilling her duties with humanity,” he added.
True to her campaign pledge to prioritize members’ welfare, the Grace Ike-led executive has also facilitated free eye surgeries for two other journalists.Mr. Nicholas Ngozichukwu of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and Mr. Kamoru Odunlami of ITV—who have been scheduled for treatment at Nizamiye Hospital following medical assessments.
Other members screened but not yet eligible for surgery were given medications and follow-up care.
Beneficiaries and members alike have commended the Council for its commitment to health and welfare.
This initiative, a product of NUJ-FCT’s partnership with Nizamiye Hospital, mark the first of such sustained medical interventions in recent years and underscores the union’s renewed dedication to a healthier, more humane media community in Nigeria’s capital.
