The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has honoured the operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Special Intervention Squad (SIS) and the Force Intelligence Department-Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) for their successful rescue of seven teachers and 39 pupils abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State after 56 days in captivity.
The recognition ceremony, held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, also paid tribute to Sergeant John Jerome Abena of the FID-IRT, who lost his life during the high-risk rescue operation.
Describing the late officer as a true patriot, IGP Disu extended heartfelt condolences to his family, saying his courage, selflessness and ultimate sacrifice reflected the highest ideals of service to the nation.
He assured that the Nigeria Police Force would continue to provide sustainable support and welfare for the family of the fallen officer, stressing that his sacrifice would never be forgotten.
The Inspector-General commended the rescue team for its professionalism, resilience and bravery, noting that the successful operation, carried out in collaboration with other security agencies, demonstrated the growing effectiveness of the Force’s intelligence-led policing strategy in tackling violent crime and protecting lives.
He disclosed that although the rescued victims were not present at the reception, they are currently receiving comprehensive medical and psychological care to aid their recovery from the traumatic experience.
IGP Disu reiterated that the welfare, motivation and recognition of officers, particularly those engaged in dangerous operations, remain a major priority of his administration.
“A policeman is first of all a human being,” he said, emphasizing the Force’s commitment to acknowledging the sacrifices of its personnel.
The police boss also charged officers and men of the Force to remain vigilant, dedicated and resolute in the fight against criminality, reaffirming the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the country while strengthening the welfare of its personnel.
