The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has initiated a major reform of police education with plans to establish a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Ogun State and upgrade 42 Police Colleges across the country.
The move was unveiled during a high-level strategic meeting held at the Federal Ministry of Education on Monday, where the IGP met with key stakeholders to chart a roadmap for improving training standards and institutional capacity within the Nigeria Police Force.
The meeting was hosted by the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, alongside the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Said Ahmad. Also in attendance was former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, underscoring the national importance of the initiative.
Central to the discussions was the development of modern infrastructure and securing accreditation for police training institutions. Stakeholders agreed to collaborate with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund to fund and construct state-of-the-art facilities, while the National Universities Commission will undertake resource verification to ensure compliance with academic standards.
According to the plan, the proposed Ogun campus of POLAC is expected to commence operations in the 2026 academic session, marking a significant milestone in efforts to decentralize and strengthen police training nationwide.
IGP Disu reiterated the Force’s commitment to professionalism, noting that the transformation of police institutions is critical to building a modern, service-driven policing system. He emphasized that integrating academic excellence with practical operational training would equip officers with the skills needed to effectively tackle evolving security challenges.
The initiative form part of broader reforms aimed at repositioning the Nigeria Police Force for improved service delivery, accountability, and public trust.
