The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has called for stronger collaboration between traditional institutions, security agencies, and local communities to enhance peace, security, and development across Nigeria.
Speaking during a working visit to Jigawa State on Monday, the IGP emphasized the importance of traditional rulers in intelligence gathering, conflict resolution, community engagement, and early warning systems, describing them as critical partners in the nation’s security architecture.
The visit featured a courtesy call on the Governor of Jigawa State, Umar Namadi, participation in the 8th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council (NTRC) in Dutse, and an interactive session with officers and men of the Jigawa State Police Command.
Addressing the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council, the IGP commended the Council under the leadership of Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar for its contributions to national unity, peaceful coexistence, and dialogue. He stressed that sustained cooperation between traditional institutions and security agencies remains essential in tackling insecurity and fostering development, particularly across Northern Nigeria.
During his meeting with Governor Namadi, IGP Disu reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to working closely with the Jigawa State Government and other stakeholders to strengthen security, public safety, and community policing initiatives.
The police chief also used the opportunity to address concerns among personnel regarding ongoing discussions on the proposed establishment of State Police. He assured officers that the reform process is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s policing framework and not to jeopardize their careers, welfare, pensions, or other benefits.
“There is no cause for anxiety,” the IGP said, explaining that while State Police could enhance grassroots security, a strong national policing institution would remain necessary to address interstate and national security challenges.
He further reiterated the Force leadership’s commitment to improving operational capacity, personnel welfare, career development, and service delivery.
Urging officers to remain professional and disciplined, Disu warned against corruption, extortion, abuse of office, and other forms of misconduct, maintaining that the Nigeria Police Force would continue to uphold a zero-tolerance policy against unethical practices.
The IGP also encouraged personnel to embrace intelligence-led policing, strengthen community engagement, and uphold the highest standards of integrity and respect for human rights.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to enhancing public trust, improving operational effectiveness, and working with governments, traditional institutions, communities, and other stakeholders to promote peace, security, and national development.
