The Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria (MMPN) has renewed its call on the Federal Government and state governments to declare Muharram 1, the first day of the Islamic calendar, a public holiday in recognition of the Islamic New Year.
In a statement issued to mark the commencement of Hijrah 1448 A.H. on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, the National President of MMPN, Alhaji Abdur-Rahman Balogun, said the declaration would promote fairness, justice and religious harmony in the country.
Balogun argued that Muharram 1 holds the same significance for Muslims as January 1 does in the Gregorian calendar and should therefore be accorded similar recognition by government authorities.
According to him, granting a public holiday for the Islamic New Year would give millions of Nigerian Muslims a stronger sense of belonging and demonstrate the government’s commitment to inclusiveness.
The MMPN president also urged governments at all levels to officially recognize the Hijrah calendar and use it alongside the Gregorian calendar in public affairs.
While congratulating Muslims and non-Muslims on witnessing another Islamic New Year, Balogun called on Muslims to use the occasion for reflection, self-renewal and greater commitment to righteous living. He also urged them to pray for the success of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in addressing the nation’s challenges.
He appealed to the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs to engage the government in dialogue on the proposed public holiday and other issues affecting the Muslim community.
Balogun further encouraged Muslims to contribute to national development by working with fellow Nigerians to build a more equitable society.
The MMPN president commended governors in several states, particularly in Northern Nigeria as well as Oyo and Osun states, for declaring public holidays to mark the Islamic New Year, and urged other state governments to follow suit.
On security, he condemned the continued attacks and killings perpetrated by insurgent groups, describing such acts as contrary to Islamic teachings. He called on the perpetrators to embrace peace and end violence.
He also advocated stricter legislation against rape, kidnapping and other forms of terrorism, expressing concern over what he described as the growing prevalence of such crimes and the perceived lack of accountability for offenders.
Balogun concluded by wishing Nigerians a peaceful and memorable Islamic New Year celebration and urged citizens to celebrate in moderation in line with Islamic values and prevailing national realities.
