The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has strongly condemned the killing of a woman accused of blasphemy in Kasuwan-Garba town, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.
The victim, identified as Amaye, a local food vendor, was reportedly attacked and killed by a mob on Saturday evening after being accused of making blasphemous remarks against Prophet Muhammad (SAW) while conversing with a customer in her restaurant.
In a statement issued by its Founder and Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC described the killing as “Bohemian, extrajudicial, barbaric and unIslamic.”
“The killers must be brought to book. We charge the Niger State Police Command to immediately set the machinery in motion to arrest, detain and prosecute the culprits. There will be no respect for the rule of law if mob killing goes unpunished,” Akintola said.
MURIC emphasized that mob actions undermined the rule of law and warned against using religion as a justification for jungle justice.
The group called on security agencies to ensure justice is served to deter future occurrences of similar incidents.
