The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has criticized Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for threatening legal action against the five kingmakers of Oyo town who opposed the appointment of Hakeem Owoade as the new Alaafin. The governor issued the warning on January 14, 2025, during the presentation of the staff of office to Owoade.
MURIC, through its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, described the governor’s threat as “bluff” and “hocus pocus.” The organization released a statement on January 15, 2025, highlighted their concerns over the governor’s approach to the issue.
According to MURIC, Governor Makinde accused the kingmakers, known as the Oyomesi, of accepting bribes during the selection process. The governor reportedly suggested that the kingmakers could avoid prosecution if they sought forgiveness from Oba Hakeem Owoade.
MURIC challenged the governor to present evidence to support his allegations, emphasized that the accusations remain unsubstantiated.
They also criticized Makinde for allegedly overstepping his bounds, blending executive powers with judicial authority by threatening legal repercussions based on unproven claims.
“The governor is attempting to use a carrot and stick approach after imposing his preferred candidate on the people of Oyo.This action undermines the principle of separation of powers and questions the legitimacy of the process.”Akintola stated.
The statement from MURIC was coming as tensions remain high in Oyo town following the controversial appointment of the new Alaafin. The organization has called on the public to remain vigilant and informed about the ongoing situation.
The governor’s office has yet to respond to MURIC’s statement. The situation continues to unfold as the kingmakers and other stakeholders consider their next steps in the face of the governor’s ultimatum.
