The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction have reaffirmed their joint commitment to addressing poverty and humanitarian challenges in Nigeria.
This assurance came during a courtesy visit by the Chairperson of the NHRC Governing Council, Dr. Salamatu Suleiman, who led a delegation of the Commission’s management team to the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Dr. Suleiman commended the Ministry for its efforts so far but called for intensified actions to curb the rising levels of poverty and to better respond to the increasing humanitarian needs across the country. She emphasized the importance of collaboration between institutions to uphold the rights and dignity of the most vulnerable groups in society.
In his response, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Hon. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, welcomed the partnership and pledged the Ministry’s continued support for initiatives aimed at protecting the rights of displaced persons, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and other at-risk groups.
The Minister highlighted previous interventions and programmes undertaken by the Ministry, noted that more targeted and sustainable mechanisms are being implemented to uplift affected populations.
He further assured the NHRC team of the Ministry’s readiness to collaborate towards ensuring Nigeria retains its “A” status at the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions, reflecting the country’s commitment to human rights standards.
