The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has urged Nigerians residing in South Africa to exercise caution and strictly adhere to safety advisories following a surge in anti-foreigner demonstrations across parts of the country.
The warning followed an official circular issued by the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg, which reported that protests in East London, Cape Town, Durban, and KwaZulu-Natal have escalated into violence, resulting in looting, destruction of property, and injuries.
According to the consulate’s intelligence report, further demonstrations are expected in Gauteng Province between April 27 and 29, as protesters intensify pressure on authorities over the presence of foreign nationals.
In response, NiDCOM advised Nigerians to avoid confrontations, steer clear of protest areas, and closely monitor local media for real-time updates. The commission also stressed the importance of remaining law-abiding at all times.
Nigerian business owners were specifically cautioned to shut down operations on Freedom Day on April 27, and consider remaining closed through April 29, noting that foreign-owned businesses are often targeted during such unrest.
NiDCOM endorsed the position of the Consul-General in Johannesburg, Amb. Ninikanwa O. Okey-Uche, affirming that the consulate remains fully operational and is working closely with South African security agencies to safeguard Nigerian nationals.
The statement further disclosed that the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, is engaging her South African counterpart to address the situation and ensure the safety of Nigerians in the country.
The commission reiterated its commitment to the welfare of Nigerians abroad and urged citizens to remain vigilant during the period of heightened tension.
