The Niger State Government in an attempt to carry out rehabilitation and sanitise highways in the state has announced a new vehicular movement schedule for heavy and articulated vehicles within the city.
Rising from an enlarged security Council meeting, the state Government resolved to control movement of trucks and trailers along Minna-Kateregi-Bida road and Eastern bye pass Minna township road.
Under the new vehicular movement arrangement, articulated trucks, tankers and trailers are only permitted to ply the roads between 10pm to 6am with effect from Tuesday.
Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Hon. Ibrahim Isah Ladan disclosed this to newsmen shortly after the meeting which had Governor Abubakar Sani-Bello, his deputy, Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed Ketso, traditional rulers,led Etsu Nupe and Chairman Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, Heads of military and paramilitary agencies and top government officials in attendance.
He said the regulated vehicular movement would be in place for two weeks after which there will be total movement restriction of heavy duty trucks to enable government carry out comprehensive rehabilitation of the roads.
“After an emergency enlarged security council meeting, it was resolved that from Tuesday, all trucks, tankers and heavy duty vehicles will be prevented from plying that road to enable full rehabilitation work on the road Bida-Kategeri-Minna and from the City Gate on the Eastern bye pass to Chanchaga bridge along Minna-Suleja road.
“Movement of this category of vehicles on these roads will be between 10pm and 6am for the next two weeks, while thereafter they will be restricted for a period of time to enable government carry out comprehensive and lasting rehabilitation of the failed sections of the roads.
“In the same vein, drivers of articulated vehicles and especially tankers with petroleum products are directed not to park their vehicles near or within dwelling communities and should avoid illegal and indiscriminate parking on highways.
“Law enforcement agencies have been mandated to ensure strict compliance of these directives,” the Secretary to State Government disclosed.
The SSG then appealed for the understanding of motorists and other stakeholders, while the vehicular movement restriction lasted
