Nigeria Congratulates Senegal’s President Faye on Election as ECOWAS Chairman

The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated the President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, on his election as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria described President Faye’s emergence as a significant milestone for the regional bloc and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting his leadership.

According to the statement, Nigeria commended the ECOWAS leadership for ensuring a seamless transition, noting that the process reflects the bloc’s commitment to democratic values, regional solidarity and collective progress.

The ministry stated that President Faye’s assumption of office came at a critical time when West Africa is confronted with common challenges requiring stronger regional cooperation to promote peace, security, economic integration and sustainable development.

As a founding member of ECOWAS and a long-standing advocate of regional cooperation, Nigeria pledged its full support for the new chairman, expressing confidence that his leadership would advance the ideals of unity, stability and prosperity across the sub-region.

The Federal Government also reiterated its readiness to work closely with Senegal and other ECOWAS member states to strengthen the organisation’s institutions, expand intra-regional trade, promote good governance and enhance peace and security.

Nigeria further congratulated Senegal on the appointment of General Birame Diop as the new President of the ECOWAS Commission, expressed optimism about working with the new leadership to advance the objectives of the regional body.
