President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Rt. Honourable Andy Burnham on his assumption of office as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, expressed confidence that Nigeria and Britain will deepen their longstanding strategic partnership under the new administration.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, said President Tinubu also congratulated the Government and people of the United Kingdom for what he described as a peaceful, orderly and seamless leadership transition, noting that it reflected the strength of the country’s democratic institutions and constitutional tradition.
According to Ebienfa, the President recalled his productive engagement with the immediate past British Prime Minister during his official visit to the United Kingdom in March 2026 and expressed optimism that Prime Minister Burnham would build on the achievements of that engagement.
Tinubu said he looked forward to exploring new opportunities for partnership, collaboration and cooperation with the United Kingdom under Burnham’s leadership.
He also expressed his desire to meet with the new British Prime Minister at the earliest opportunity, both bilaterally and within the framework of the Commonwealth, to further strengthen bilateral relations and advance shared priorities.
The President reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working closely with the new UK administration in addressing common global challenges and promoting mutual prosperity.
The Federal Government wished Prime Minister Burnham a successful tenure and reiterated its readiness to collaborate with his government in advancing the interests of both countries.
