The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has clarified the circumstances surrounding a viral video circulating on social media, which appeared to show a tragic shooting incident involving some of its operatives. Contrary to the impression created by various online platforms, the Service stated that the incident occurred over six years ago, on Sunday, 17th February 2019.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, 3rd June 2025, by the National Public Relations Officer, Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, the NCS confirmed that the shooting took place at the Shagamu Interchange in Ogun State and was addressed comprehensively at the time.
“Following the ugly occurrence, the Service took immediate steps to address the situation in line with its internal procedures. A disciplinary panel was set up, and officers found culpable were dismissed from the Service,” the statement noted.
The NCS reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and adherence to rules of engagement, stressing that it does not condone misconduct from its personnel under any circumstances.
While acknowledging public concern over the resurfaced footage, the Service urged Nigerians to refrain from spreading misleading content and instead seek verified information through its official channels.
Under the leadership of Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, the NCS said it continue to promote transparency and uphold the rule of law through strengthened internal controls and targeted capacity-building initiatives.
The Service also assured the public of its resolve to maintain trust and integrity in its operations while fostering a culture of respect for human dignity.
