The Nigerian Army has intensified efforts to enhance professionalism and operational efficiency with the commencement of a four-day, bi-annual Career Planning Seminar for soldiers at the Army War College Nigeria.
The seminar, which began on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, in Abuja, is part of a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening human resource development and preparing soldiers for a structured and successful career path.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, described the seminar’s theme “Career Planning in the Nigerian Army for Soldiers: Charting a Successful Career Path from Enlistment to Retirement in a Joint Environment” as both timely and critical.
Represented by the Chief of Special Services and Programmes (Army), Major General Aminu Garba, the COAS emphasised that effective career planning is essential to maximising personnel potential in an increasingly complex security landscape.
He noted that the evolving nature of modern warfare requires a proactive, innovative and resilient force capable of addressing multi-dimensional threats. According to him, deliberate and strategic career management plays a vital role in improving productivity, efficiency and overall operational success within the Army.
Lieutenant General Shaibu further stressed that establishing a well-defined career path for soldiers aligns with his Command Philosophy, which seeks to transform the Nigerian Army into a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient force capable of operating effectively in joint and multi-agency environments.
He encouraged participants to take full advantage of the seminar, describing it as a platform for intellectual engagement, knowledge sharing and constructive dialogue aimed at advancing career development.
In his welcome remarks, the Chief of Personnel Management (Army), Major General Adewale Adekeye, highlighted the importance of the initiative in reinforcing the Army’s personnel management framework.
He explained that effective career development depends on accurate data, comprehensive reporting from units and informed analysis. Adekeye added that the seminar is designed to help soldiers better understand career progression while aligning their personal ambitions with the broader objectives of the Nigerian Army.
The seminar is expected to equip participants with the tools and insights needed to navigate their careers effectively, ultimately contributing to a more disciplined, professional and mission-ready force.
