The Nigerian Navy has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta, following the arrest of a suspected syndicate leader in Bayelsa State.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, naval authorities disclosed that personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Formoso carried out a successful intelligence-led operation on April 25, 2026, in Egbama-Angalabiri, located in Ekeramo Local Government Area.
According to the Navy, the operation led to the arrest of a suspected pipeline vandal identified as Mr. Godwin, popularly known as “Idiot,” who is believed to be the leader of a notorious criminal network operating along the Clough Creek axis. He was apprehended at a night market where he was allegedly extorting illegal levies from traders.
The statement further revealed that the raid followed weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering, which confirmed the suspect’s involvement in recent attacks on oil and gas infrastructure, as well as details of his movements and hideouts.
During a follow-up operation at the suspect’s residence, naval operatives reportedly came under attack from armed members of the syndicate. However, the Navy said its personnel responded swiftly, forcing the attackers to retreat.
A search of the premises led to the recovery of two handheld radios and other tools believed to have been used in coordinating illegal activities. Subsequent intelligence obtained from the suspect resulted in the arrest of another individual, identified as Mr. Happiness, along with the recovery of a pump-action gun.
Both suspects have since been handed over to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Navy reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain and protecting critical national infrastructure, warning criminal elements engaged in economic sabotage to desist or face decisive action.
The latest development underscored intensified efforts by security agencies to curb oil theft and restore stability in the Niger Delta region.
