The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has officially commissioned its Innovation Space at its headquarters in Abuja, marking a significant step in strengthening Nigeria’s digital innovation ecosystem and empowering young tech talents.
The event, which attracted key stakeholders including the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Nafiu, corps members, industry partners, and technology enthusiasts, featured the showcase of two innovative solutions developed under NITDA’s Idea2Impact Programme.
In his opening remarks, NITDA Director-General, Dr. Abdullahi Kashifu Inuwa, described the launch as a “remarkable milestone” in the agency’s mission to equip young Nigerians with the skills and opportunities needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving global economy.
He emphasized the importance of skill acquisition and strategic career planning, noting that between 3.5 to 4 million young Nigerians enter the labour market annually. According to him, success in today’s world requires not just technical competence but also visibility and self-promotion.
Drawing from personal experience, Inuwa recounted how he leveraged his skills as a corps member to build a website that later earned him ₦1.5 million in 2004, a turning point that shaped his career trajectory. He urged corps members to seize opportunities, challenge themselves, and position their skills for real-world impact.
A major highlight of the event was the live demonstration of two functional digital solutions an Internship Application System and a Seamless Identity System developed by corps members for NITDA’s internal use. The agency also unveiled the next phase of the initiative, tagged Challenge 2.0, alongside a new NYSC/IT Students Training Manual.
Brigadier General O.O Nafiu, in his remarks, commended NITDA for its commitment to youth development, described the initiative as a model for how organisations can harness the potential of corps members.
He revealed that the NYSC had already begun digitising its identity card system, allowing corps members to access their IDs via mobile devices. He further called for deeper collaboration with NITDA to integrate innovative solutions into NYSC operations, particularly in areas such as verification and data management.
The NYSC DG also challenged government agencies and private organisations to move beyond routine deployment of corps members, urging them to create structured programmes that harness their skills for national development.
The event also featured the presentation of awards to mentors of Challenge 1.0, recognition of participating teams, and a guided tour of the newly commissioned Innovation Space.
In his closing remarks, Special Assistant on Innovation and Research to the NITDA DG, Lukman Lamidi, expressed appreciation to the agency’s leadership, mentors, and participants for their contributions. He noted that the Innovation Space would serve as a hub for nurturing ideas into scalable solutions capable of driving national growth.
The newly launched facility is expected to foster collaboration, creativity, and the development of impactful digital products, reinforcing NITDA’s role as a catalyst for innovation in Nigeria’s technology ecosystem.
