In a groundbreaking move for gender representation in Nigeria’s military, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has hailed the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, for appointing Lieutenant Colonel Onyechi Anele as the first female spokesperson of the Nigerian Army.
The Union described the appointment as a bold and progressive step that reflects the Army’s growing commitment to gender inclusivity and empowerment.
“This is not just about breaking barriers,” said Comrade Jide Oyekunle, Secretary of the NUJ FCT Council. “It’s about setting a precedent that challenges stereotypes and opens doors for more women to lead in spaces where they’ve been historically underrepresented.”
Lieutenant Colonel Anele’s appointment marks a pivotal moment in the Nigerian Armed Forces, traditionally dominated by male leadership. The NUJ emphasized that placing women in high-level communication and leadership roles will not only project a positive image of the Army but also inspire a new generation of women to consider careers in the military.
“This is a call to duty for Lieutenant Colonel Anele and a moment of pride for every Nigerian woman,” the Union noted.
