The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration aimed at enhancing the safety and security of corps members across the country.
This renewed pledge was made when the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, paid a courtesy visit to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
During the visit, Nafiu congratulated the IGP on his appointment and commended him for the recent inauguration of a special tactical team, describing it as a proactive step towards tackling emerging security challenges.
The NYSC boss noted that the police have remained a critical partner in the successful execution of the scheme’s activities since its establishment. He appealed for sustained and enhanced security coverage for corps members and NYSC officials, both within orientation camps and at their various places of primary assignment.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, Nafiu specifically called for heightened protection of corps members, their lodges, and personal property, stressing their vulnerability during election periods when they are often deployed for national assignments.
He also raised the issue of exemption certificates for graduates of the Nigeria Police Academy, explaining that the NYSC Act exempts members of the armed forces and paramilitary agencies from national service. Nafiu expressed the need for collaboration with the academy’s management to ensure eligible graduates are duly issued certificates of exemption in line with statutory provisions.
In his response, IGP Disu assured the NYSC leadership of the police’s unwavering commitment to the safety of corps members nationwide. He disclosed that the police have records of corps lodges across the country, enabling timely and effective response to security needs.
The IGP welcomed the proposal regarding exemption certificates for Police Academy graduates and pledged continued cooperation between the two institutions to strengthen operational synergy.
The meeting underscored ongoing efforts by both agencies to reinforce institutional collaboration in addressing security concerns and safeguarding the welfare of corps members across Nigeria.
