A former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Major General Johnson Olawunmi (Rtd), has reaffirmed the Scheme’s enduring relevance to Nigeria’s national integration and development, more than five decades after its establishment.
Olawunmi stated that the NYSC has consistently upheld the ideals behind its creation, meeting the country’s expectations despite various operational challenges over the years. He noted that the Scheme remains a vital platform for fostering unity and promoting socio-cultural cohesion across Nigeria.
Highlighting its achievements, the former NYSC boss pointed to the Scheme’s contributions in community development, participation in critical national programmes, and its role in strengthening cultural integration. According to him, these accomplishments have positioned the NYSC as a key national instrument for bridging divides across religious, socio-economic, and cultural lines.
Olawunmi made these remarks during a recent meeting with the incumbent NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, who paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.
He also praised the quality and dedication of NYSC personnel, describing them as among the most competent he worked with during his tenure. He urged the current leadership to continue harnessing their potential for effective service delivery.
The former DG added that he remains actively interested in the affairs of the Scheme, offering guidance and insights when necessary.
Speaking during the visit, Brigadier General Nafiu said the meeting was aimed at honouring his predecessor and acknowledging his impactful leadership. He commended Olawunmi’s resilience and innovations while in office, particularly the introduction of the Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD), which has enabled corps members to deliver healthcare services to underserved rural communities.
Nafiu also highlighted the implementation of electronic registration for corps members as another milestone achieved during Olawunmi’s tenure.
Major General Johnson Olawunmi served as NYSC Director-General from January 2014 to April 2016.
