The ancient city of Ile-Ife came alive on Saturday as dignitaries from across the country gathered for the installation of Chief Mrs. Olufunsho Amosun as the Yeye Moremi Oodua by the Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.
The colourful ceremony, held at Afenworo Square opposite the Ooni’s Palace, also marked the 60th birthday celebration of the philanthropist and founder of the Uplift Development Foundation, according to a statement issued by the Director of Media and Public Affairs at the palace, Otunba Moses Olafare.
Among the dignitaries present was former President Olusegun Obasanjo, represented by his wife, Bola Obasanjo. Also in attendance were Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and several former governors, lawmakers, business leaders, and traditional rulers.
Speaking at the event, Obasanjo described the Yeye Moremi title as one of the most revered honours in Yorubaland, symbolising courage, sacrifice, and service to humanity. He commended the Ooni for preserving Yoruba cultural heritage and promoting unity across Nigeria.
In her acceptance speech, Mrs. Amosun expressed gratitude to God and the Ooni for the honour, pledging to uphold the legacy of Moremi Ajasoro. She described the title as a call to greater service, responsibility, and commitment to humanity.
“I return all glory, honour and adoration to Almighty God for this rare privilege,” she said, adding that she would carry out her duties with humility, integrity, and diligence.
Governor Makinde, in his remarks, emphasised the importance of unity among Yoruba leaders, noting that the gathering transcended political affiliations and reflected a shared commitment to the progress of the Yoruba nation.
“There is no political party here today. What we are seeing is unity in the interest of the Yoruba nation,” he said.
The Ooni congratulated the new Yeye Moremi, describing her as a compassionate and selfless individual whose life reflects the virtues of the legendary Moremi. He urged her to continue promoting cultural values, unity, and development within Yorubaland and beyond.
The revered monarch also lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting traditional institutions and cultural heritage.
The event attracted a wide array of prominent personalities, including former governors such as Ibikunle Amosun, Babatunde Fashola, Gbenga Daniel, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and Kayode Fayemi, alongside lawmakers, captains of industry, and First Ladies from various states.
Traditional rulers from across Yorubaland also graced the occasion, lending cultural significance and grandeur to the historic installation.
The ceremony further featured the presence of the Ooni’s queens, Olori Aderonke Ogunwusi and Olori Ashley Ogunwusi, added colour and splendour to the event.
