The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the dismissal of ASP Nuhu Usman and three other officers over the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old man, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.
Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, disclosed this while addressing journalists on the outcome of investigations into the April 26, 2026 incident.
According to him, the deceased had received a parcel from a friend in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, which he later attempted to waybill to Sapele. The parcel was reportedly searched by bystanders and found to contain a fabricated Beretta pistol and four rounds of 9mm live ammunition, prompting a citizen’s arrest.
Placid explained that the suspect was subsequently handed over to a police team led by ASP Nuhu Usman. However, in what the Force described as a violation of established rules of engagement, the officer allegedly shot and killed the unarmed and already restrained suspect.
He said findings from an investigation conducted by the Police Monitoring Unit revealed that the actions of the officers involved amounted to professional misconduct, abuse of office, and unlawful killing.
“The Force wishes to be unequivocal: no criminal suspicion, however grave, justifies extra-judicial action. Every suspect is entitled to due process under the law,” he stated.
The police spokesman added that the affected officers have been taken into custody, while internal disciplinary procedures have been concluded, leading to their dismissal from service following ratification by the Police Service Commission.
He further disclosed that the case file has been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation for vetting and prosecution, assuring that the Force would cooperate fully to ensure justice is served.
Meanwhile, the police said efforts are ongoing to arrest the driver who delivered the parcel as well as two vigilante members linked to the incident, who are currently at large.
The Force extended condolences to the family of the deceased and reassured Nigerians of its commitment to transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights, urging the public to remain calm and support ongoing investigations.
