Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has formally endorsed his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election in the state.
The endorsement was made on Monday, April 27, 2026, during a high-level meeting held at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat and a delegation of political leaders met with the governor and members of the state executive council.
According to Sanwo-Olu, the decision followed broad consultations with key stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress (APC), who unanimously expressed support for Hamzat’s aspiration.
He described his deputy as a competent and experienced leader, saying Hamzat is “fit, well-prepared, and fully familiar with the workings of government,” having worked closely with him over the past several years.
Sanwo-Olu also praised Hamzat’s loyalty, integrity, and commitment to public service, adding that his experience in governance makes him well-suited to lead Lagos State.
During the meeting, Sanwo-Olu reportedly lifted Hamzat’s hand in a symbolic gesture of support after prayers were offered for his political ambition.
The endorsement has further strengthened Hamzat’s growing political momentum, as he has in recent weeks received backing from several influential figures, including political leaders, lawmakers, and local government officials across Lagos State.
Among those who have previously expressed support are Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, and other senior APC stakeholders, who have described Hamzat as a consensus candidate for the 2027 race.
The development signaled early consolidation within the ruling party in Lagos ahead of the next governorship election cycle, as consultations and endorsements continue to intensify.
