As part of activities marking World Consumer Rights Day 2025, Save The Consumers Initiative (SCI) has announced plans to host a Consumer Protection Conference in Abuja on March 14, 2025.
The conference, themed “Transparent Information – Responsible Consumption,” aimed to address the growing concerns over poor service delivery and substandard products in Nigeria. It will bring together stakeholders to discuss ways to ensure greater transparency in business dealings and protect consumer rights.
According to the Executive Director of Save the Consumers Initiative, Aliyu Ilias, the event will provide an opportunity for regulatory agencies to engage with consumers on their roles in ensuring product and service standards.
“The increasing prevalence of fake and substandard goods, especially in pharmaceuticals and other essential products, has been a major concern. This conference will foster dialogue on effective consumer protection strategies and responsible consumption,” he stated.
The conference will be held at Novare Mall, Wuse Zone 6, Abuja, beside the PDP Secretariat.
The keynote speaker for the event is Tunji Bello, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Executive Vice Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).
Special guests of honor include:
- Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, Director-General, Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON)
- Prof. Moji Adeyeye, Director-General, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC)
SCI emphasized that consumers also have a role to play by verifying the authenticity of products and services through regulatory bodies.
“There must be a system of effective communication between consumers and regulatory agencies. Nigerians need to be adequately informed about the standards and quality of goods and services available in the country,” Ilias added.
The World Consumer Rights Day is observed annually on March 15 to promote consumer awareness and protection globally.
