Former President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr. Chris Isiguzo, has commended Nigeria’s security agencies for their commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining stability across the country, despite the complex challenges confronting the nation’s security architecture.
Speaking at the National Security Summit organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Isiguzo said the successful convening of the summit in the Federal Capital Territory was itself evidence of the tireless efforts of security personnel working daily to keep the country safe.
He stressed the need for balanced and responsible reportage of security issues, urging journalists and media organisations to exercise caution in their criticism of security institutions while remaining committed to holding them accountable.
According to him, security operatives are not abstract institutions but individuals who work under difficult and often dangerous conditions in service to the nation.
“These officers are fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters and relatives of people. They continue to give their best within the circumstances they find themselves and deserve encouragement alongside constructive scrutiny,” he said.
Isiguzo noted that while the media has a constitutional responsibility to inform the public and demand accountability, it must also appreciate the realities and limitations faced by security personnel on the frontlines.
He further advocated regular engagement between the leadership of security agencies and media executives, arguing that sustained interaction would foster mutual understanding and help bridge information gaps that often shape public perception of security matters.
According to him, such engagements would provide journalists with greater context on security operations and challenges, leading to more informed reporting and enhanced public confidence in national security efforts.
The National Security Summit brought together media practitioners, security experts, policymakers and heads of security agencies to deliberate on strategies for strengthening national security and promoting effective collaboration between the media and security institutions.
Isiguzo’s remarks underscored the importance of a balanced partnership between the press and security agencies in addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges and advancing national stability.
