The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating flood disaster that struck Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State on Thursday, leaving over 100 people dead, thousands displaced, and properties destroyed.
In a condolence message signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, Speaker Abbas described the incident as tragic and unfortunate, lamenting the extensive loss of lives and destruction of livelihoods.
The Speaker extended his heartfelt condolences to Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, the government, and the people of Niger State, particularly the affected Mokwa community. He urged them to remain steadfast and resilient in the face of the natural disaster.
“The loss is not only to Niger State but to the entire nation. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and the entire community affected by this tragedy,” he said.
While praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased and comfort for their families, Speaker Abbas also called on the Federal Government and all relevant emergency management agencies to act promptly in providing relief and support to the victims.
He further appealed to well-meaning Nigerians, including corporate bodies and humanitarian organizations, to assist in alleviating the suffering of the affected individuals and families.
The Mokwa flood disaster, which followed heavy downpours, has been described by local officials as one of the worst in recent years, triggering widespread calls for improved environmental and emergency response strategies across vulnerable regions in Nigeria.
