Sultan confirms July 9 as 2022 Eid-el-Kabir celebration day

The Sultan of Sokoto and President of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared July 9 for 2022 Eid-el Kabir or sallah celebration day.

This is according to statement from the National Moon Sighting Committee (NMSC), on Wednesday, June 29, 2022.

According to the statement, Sultan Abubakar declared Thursday June 30, 2022 as the first day of Dhul Hijjah.

The statement reads; “The Sultanate Council has Thursday, 30th June 2022 as 1st day of Zul-Hijjah 1443H. Accordingly therefore, Eidul Adha will be on Saturday, 10th Zul-Hijjah 1443H (9th July 2022) In Sha Allah.

“His Eminence, The Sultan hereby calls upon the Muslim Ummah to intensify efforts in acts of worship during the first ten days of the blessed month of Zul-Hijjah and also pray for peace, stability and progress of the country,” the statement said.

During Eid, Muslims sacrifice a sheep, lamb, goat, or a cow to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail at the behest of God.

Being satisfied with Abraham’s unwavering devotion, however, God sent him a sheep and asked him to sacrifice the animal instead of his son.

Muslims around the world celebrate Eid Al Adha in the same way, with the morning being marked with Eid prayer and the slaughtering of the sacrificial animal. This is followed by Eid meals, family gatherings, and visits to loved ones.
