The Association of Corporate Editors (ACOE) has urged Nigerian youths to shun violence, political thuggery and other social vices, while actively participating in the country’s democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The ACOE Chairman, Sola Akingboye, made the call in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja to commemorate the 2026 International Youth Day.
Akingboye described Nigerian youths as critical stakeholders in the nation’s social, economic and political development, stressed that their energy, creativity and resilience were essential to building a better future for the country.
He urged young Nigerians to remain focused, resilient and committed to their aspirations, while using their talents and skills to contribute meaningfully to national development.
According to him, the country need the active participation of young people in driving positive change, but they also require the support and encouragement of the older generation to realise their full potential.
He therefore appealed to older Nigerians to create more opportunities for youths to showcase their talents and contribute to the growth and development of the country.
The ACOE chairman, however, cautioned Nigerian youths against allowing themselves to be used for violence, political thuggery and other destructive activities.
He warned that involvement in violent activities could jeopardise their future aspirations and deprive the nation of the benefits of their creativity, energy and talents.
Akingboye also urged youths to take greater interest in governance and democratic processes, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach.
He called on them to participate massively in the elections and fulfil their civic responsibilities by engaging actively and responsibly in the electoral process.
He said greater youth participation in governance was necessary to ensure that the interests, aspirations and concerns of young Nigerians were adequately represented in national decision-making.
The ACOE chairman also commended the efforts of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) and the Ministry of Youth Development in promoting youth development and making Nigerian youths more resourceful and productive.
He said the contributions of both institutions deserved continued support and recognition from stakeholders across the country.
International Youth Day is observed annually to draw attention to issues affecting young people and celebrate their contributions to society.
Akingboye urged Nigerian youths to use the occasion to reaffirm their commitment to peace, responsible citizenship, innovation and national development.
He assured them of the continued support of stakeholders in creating an environment where young Nigerians can develop their potential and contribute positively to the country’s future.
