Headquarters 82 Division of the Nigerian Army has dismissed reports alleging that its troops deployed to Ochon Community in Obubra Local Government Area, Cross River State, were harassing and intimidating residents in connection with a land dispute with neighbouring Alesi Community in Ikom Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on Sunday, September 21, 2025, by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations, 82 Division described the reports as “false, misleading, and aimed at discrediting the efforts of troops working tirelessly to maintain peace in the area.”
The Division explained that troops of 245 Battalion are on internal security operations within the area to protect lives, safeguard infrastructure, and assist civil authorities in maintaining law and order. It added that their presence has nothing to do with land ownership disputes.
Following renewed clashes between the two communities on September 19, troops under the Division were said to have responded swiftly to prevent escalation and restore normalcy in both Ikom and Obubra Local Government Areas.
Reaffirming its neutrality, the Army stressed that it has no stake or interest in communal, ethnic, political, or land-related matters, emphasizing that its mandate remains the preservation of peace and protection of citizens.
“The Division hereby requests the public to disregard false reports intended to undermine peace support efforts,” the statement read, assuring residents of Cross River State of the troops’ professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights.
82 Division also urged community leaders to embrace peaceful avenues for dispute resolution while encouraging members of the public to report credible cases of security threats or misconduct by personnel through established channels.
