The House of Representatives has summoned the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, alongside the country’s service chiefs to appear before lawmakers over the worsening security situation across Nigeria.
The decision was taken during Tuesday’s plenary after the adoption of a motion moved by Hon. Sulaiman Gumi, who represents the Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency of Zamfara State. Lawmakers expressed serious concern over the continued rise in killings, kidnappings, bandit attacks, terrorism, and other violent crimes across the country, despite repeated assurances from security agencies and the Federal Government.
According to the House, the situation has become more alarming following recent attacks on schools in parts of Oyo and Borno States, where armed groups reportedly abducted pupils, teachers, and other school staff. These incidents have intensified public fear and renewed criticism of the country’s security architecture.
The summons also comes amid ongoing national outrage over repeated school abductions, which have once again placed pressure on authorities to strengthen protection for educational institutions, especially in high-risk areas.
Lawmakers further referenced recent statements by President Bola Tinubu, who had assured Nigerians that his administration was committed to rescuing abducted victims and improving security across vulnerable communities. The President had also directed security agencies to enhance intelligence-led operations and reinforce school protection measures, including improved early warning systems and coordinated response mechanisms.
Despite these assurances, the House noted that attacks have continued, including a deadly incident at a school in Oyo State where pupils and staff were abducted and a teacher was reportedly killed, as well as a separate attack in Borno State where armed men also took several students.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has condemned the repeated school attacks, warning that continued insecurity could force educators to withdraw their services if urgent action is not taken.
The House of Representatives said the summoned officials are expected to explain the current security strategy, outline measures being implemented, and provide updates on efforts to rescue victims still held by kidnappers and armed groups.
