The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and Global Rights Advocates for Sustainable Justice have initiated a strategic partnership to improve regulatory awareness and compliance among Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs) across Nigeria.
This development emerged during a courtesy visit by a delegation from Global Rights to the Registrar-General and Chief Executive Officer of CAC, Hussaini Ishaq Magaji, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking during the visit, the Programme Manager of Global Rights, Edosa Oviawe, noted that despite the critical role Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) play in national development, many are found wanting in regulatory compliance largely due to ignorance of the legal framework governing their operations.
He disclosed that Global Rights has so far trained over 400 CSOs through regional conferences aimed at improving compliance levels. He expressed the organisation’s readiness to collaborate with CAC in raising awareness on key post-registration obligations, including the filing of bi-annual statements and other statutory requirements.
In his response, the Registrar-General, Hussaini Ishaq Magaji, welcomed the initiative, described the visit as timely and necessary in addressing existing knowledge gaps among operators of NGOs and other incorporated trustees.
Magaji revealed that the Commission continue to receive numerous cases related to poor administration of incorporated trustees, especially concerning changes of trustees and statutory publications. He emphasized the need for continuous engagement and sensitization of the sector, pointing out that bridging the regulatory knowledge gap is essential for effective governance and accountability within the civil society space.
He reiterated CAC’s commitment to reforms and partnerships that will strengthen transparency and regulatory compliance among nonprofit entities operating in Nigeria.
