A fire outbreak over the weekend has destroyed a block of classrooms at Okaro Primary School, Urhonigbe, Edo State, prompting an urgent response from the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).
Authorities confirmed that the incident occurred outside school hours, ensuring no students or staff were harmed. However, the inferno caused significant damage to school property.
Following the incident, the Executive Chairman of Edo SUBEB, Barr. Mrs. Onomen Goodness Briggs, deployed a high-level fact-finding team to assess the destruction and recommend immediate interventions. The delegation, led by Mrs. Angela Okpanem, Board Member for Edo South, includes Mr. Austin Otas, Director in Charge of Schools, and other senior officials.
While the cause of the fire remained unknown, investigations are currently underway. Meanwhile, SUBEB is exploring alternative learning arrangements to ensure minimal disruption to pupils’ education.
“We appreciate the concern and support from the Urhonigbe community and assure stakeholders that SUBEB is committed to restoring normal school activities as swiftly as possible,” the board stated.
